Inspired to Turn the Page

For a year where nothing really terrible happened to me or my close circle of family and friends, 2017 was still a stressful time, for much of it.  So, on the 365th day of 2017, the last day of the year, 12/31/17, I am inspired to turn the page on 2017 and look forward to 2018.  I really do believe that the best is yet to come, and I am inspired to, as I said in Church today, have less stress and more faith that goodness and good things will happen.  I hope that you are all able to find your hopeful and happy inspirations as we turn the page from 2017 to 2018.  See you on the flip side!  HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Inspired by Eggs

12/30/2017, the 6th day of Christmas and the penultimate 364th day of 2017.  And, as the song goes, the day is about 6 geese, a layin'.  But, it's not geese I want to be inspired by today (although there are TONS of them around).  No, today, the egg is the inspiring element.  An egg is a new life, a chance for a new beginning.  After the year I experienced in 2017, I am ready for a new start, a new beginning for 2018.  Tomorrow we say goodbye to 2017, and today we can be inspired about the new beginning that 2018 will bring!

Ring Inspirations

It's the 363rd day of 2017 and the last palindromic day of 2017.  12/29/17 was a wonderful day.  Sure, Alexa sprained her ankle at basketball practice, but that did not stop us from having a wonderful family day on the 5th day of Christmas.  And, as the song goes, "my true love gave to me, Fiiiiive Golden Rings!"  No, I did not get jewelry today, but I did get to watch my spouse in action and marvel at her skills as a mother, as a nurse, as a person!  She is my true, true partner and we work hard, together, to keep our family going.  So, for the last palindromic, wonderful, family day, I will focus on the golden ring I have on my left hand's ring finger, and be inspired to keep working with my partner for as long as we both shall live.

First Responders Inspire

The 362nd day of 2017 started off with some excitement.  On 12/28/17, a house on the street behind ours had a fire.  It was a fire that could have been a lot worse than it ended up being.  But the first responders reported, quickly, in sub-freezing temperatures, and quickly got the fire under control, saved as much of the house they could, and kept it from spreading any further.  These first responders: Fire, Police, EMS, the nurses, doctors, and other health professionals, and, of course, the amazing men and women of the military who serve and protect, even when it's the holidays, and many times away from their family and friends.  I never forget them, but, today, I am inspired to appreciate them even more.  Given it's the fourth day of Christmas, I thought the most fitting image was this of verses of Psalm 10-11.  Oaklyn certainly had its angels today!

Christmas Movies Inspire

12/27/17, and another day of Christmas Vacation.  The Third Day of Christmas (and Day #361 of 2017).  We hankered down tonight and watched Christmas Movies.  Not really good movies, but movies that made us laugh and had Christmas themes.  So they were really good for us.  I am inspired by family time, especially in the Christmas season.

Twelve Days Inspire

12/26/17 is the Second Day of Christmas and the 360th day of 2017.  And, yes, I said the second day of Christmas.  For some, it seems, the mindset is towards New Year's and even Valentine's Day.  Radio stations that have been playing 24/7 holiday tunes since Halloween are now suddenly back to their standard format.  Not me, I am still in Christmas mode and I am inspired to enjoy all TWELVE days of Christmas.  I am hoping that the Christmas message of hope, joy, and generosity is living in all of you as well.

Christmas Inspirations

CHRISTMAS!  Day #359 of 2017 was spent with family.  12/25/17 was family first, middle, and last - the way Christmas is supposed to be.  I am inspired to always remember the most important part of life, family.  And glad to be with them today! ❤️🎄❤️

Christmas Eve Inspirations

Christmas Eve is always a special day for our family.  12/24/17 found us at Church (even moreso since the 358th day of 2017 was also a Sunday).  AM Service, Family Traditional Lunch, brief rest, and back at the Evening Service with brass and choir anthems and the carols.  Yes, music is one of the best parts of the Christmas Eve Service.  But, in this hectic time (for me, personally, and the world, politically), the message meant so much to me.  The story of Christmas is more than just a story of a baby being born who would become the Savior of us all.  It is a story of a baby being born into a turbulent political time, while the oppressive politicians of the time were rounding up people and figuring out how to charge them more taxes.  Kinda like now.  Except the story is a HOPEFUL one.  Christmas represents HOPE.  And hope is what we should have, as we pass the light around the world, as we passed the light around the sanctuary today, with our candles.  I am inspired to have hope, even amidst turbulent times, and to pass the light and hope from myself to those that I meet.  May we all have the spirit of Christmas and do the same.  MERRY CHRISTMAS, everyone!

Christmas Traditions Inspire

One thing that is certainly true about the Sherr Family is that we love our traditions.  Tomorrow, Christmas Eve, is Sunday, so we cannot join the usual group in the light show traditions.  So our family did them tonight, on 12/23/17!  And we will join them for lunch tomorrow and then all of our wonderful Christmas Eve traditions will follow.  On the 357th day of 2017, I am allowing the traditions to inspire me to feel the Christmas spirit and be happy.

Christmas Light Inspirations

As I drove around, on the evening of the 356th day of 2017, in Oaklyn and neighboring towns, I came to the realization that one of the reasons I love Christmas so much is the lights.  I really appreciate the artistry of my neighbors, of the towns (especially Haddon Ave. in Collingswood), and I just am inspired to be happier when I see the lights of Christmas.  It's 12/22/17, so the lights will soon be gone, but, while they are here I will allow them to inspire me to be happy and content.  Christmas is coming!

Task List Inspirations

So, on Tuesday, I stated it was the second to last palidromic day of 2017.  Well, Day #355 had a palindromic bent, it is 12/21.  12/21/17 found me working to check things off of my Task List.  It is something I will continue to do as we head into break as I want to start 2018, at work, caught up and ready to roll.  I am inspired to complete these tasks, and enjoy myself doing so.

Low Point Inspirations

On the 354th day of 2017, I feel like I have hit a slight low point.  Maybe it's the shortest daylight hours of the year, maybe it's the horrible political climate, maybe it's the end-of-semester exhaustion, I dunno.  But, on 12/21/17, I had some glimmers of the excellence that is to come.  A great day of fellowship in the office, filled with holiday food and laughter, the realization that daylight hours will just get more and more plentiful in the days and weeks to come, watching my daughter and her classmates in an amazing vocal concert, spending a great dinner with my family, these are all beacons of hope in a rough time.  So, today, I want to focus my inspiration on realizing that change (for the good) is in the future and let's wait for it and embrace it when it arrives.

Inspired to De-Stress

On the second to last palindromic day of 2017 (Day #353), things were not as great as they usually are on palindromic days.  Yes, at the end of 12/19/17 I am exhausted.  And stressed.  So I went searching for de-stressing suggestions and, as I get ready to turn in, I am going to be inspired to follow these tactics.....vacation is coming.

Role Models Inspire

And the workday on 12/18/17 ended at another retirement party for a long-time colleague.  I got to speak, on the 352nd day of 2017, and I expressed my appreciation at the example that this colleague has provided for those of us who worked with him for parts of the past 43 years.  I am inspired by, and appreciative of, those who have led the way, taught me the ropes, and helped me along the way.  I will miss my retiring colleague(s), but will always aspire to do as they taught.

Tuba Christmas Inspirations

The 351st day of 2017 was, again, filled with tons of musical inspirations.  From Alexa and Anna playing their piano piece at Church, through the Children's Pageant, to Tuba Christmas, and ended with Anna's performance with ChildrenSong at the Ritz Theater, in town, the sounds of music were plentiful.  On 12/17/17, I felt so lucky to be able to perform with Tuba Christmas.  Each year, we gather, rehearse for 2 hours, and then play a concert for an appreciative audience.  It is one of the highlights of the season, and I am inspired to continue to keep this tradition in future years.

Christmas Music Inspires

There was a lot going on during the 350th day of 2017.  12/16/17 was filled with errands, a basketball game, a babysitting gig, practicing for Church piano playing, trombone Christmas, and pretzel making.  Some of these event were directly Christmas music.  But even the events that were not required a driver (me!), and I was listening to the XM holiday channel the whole time.  I love holiday music.  It inspires me to be happier, and I think it inspires others as well.  People seem happier during the season (as long as they are not in a shopping mall).  Hope your holiday preparations are going well.

Commuting Inspirations

Although I left work early on the 349th day of 2017, I still arrived later than I had hoped on 12/15/17.  I (and many others) had a horrible commute home.  Rush Hour snow is the worst kind of snow.  I was inspired to get home in time to see Anna before her Snowball Dance and, thankfully, I arrived with time to do so, even if I could not help set up.  Not much else inspired me today, just an inspiration to get home by any means necessary.

Bovine Inspirations

Day #348 started in a unique way.  On 12/14/17, I got texts, tweets, and FB posts about my Church, our Pastor, and our cow being in the news.  And as the day progressed, the national news even picked up the story (slow news day, I guess).  Although I am sorry for the lack of sleep that John and Michael got last night, I am happy for the celebrity this has brought our nativity scene and I hope that it inspires people to come visit us and experience the living nativity and the way the story can be told in real life.

The Arts Inspire

The end of the 347 the day of 2017 was very busy, but also very fulfilling.  I rushed home from work on 12/13/17 to pick up Anna from a rehearsal to get her to an awards ceremony for an essay contest at the VFW (she came in 2nd!)  Then we rushed over to Colls to watch Alexa in the Instrumental Concert.  I love that my children are immersed in the arts: vocal, language (i.e. writing), and instrumental (not to mention the theater that Anna has been doing as well!)  I am inspired by the talent on display in these arenas and inspired to keep feeding the love of the arts in my kids and their classmates.

Alabama Inspirations

While it is not over, yet, and almost 1/2 the votes still voted for an accused pedophile over a "Liberal," the 346th day of 2017 has brought some hope to this crazy political world.  As 12/12/17 comes to an end, it seems that the Alabama voters have rejected Roy Moore.  So, I know this really does not mean that all worries are over and it does not mean that America is headed back to political sanity, it is a beacon of hope in a crazy time.....so, for tonight, I am inspired that a Democrat won in Alabama, even if he was running against a dumpster fire.  Let's hope the momentum continues.

Disney Songs Inspire

Day #345 was a long day.  A lot of meetings at work on 12/11/17.  And then a few after work events, parent-teacher conferences at OPS, and then finally a dine and donate for Collingswood Softball.  But the best part of the day was when driving Alexa and her friends home, and we were listening to Disney Music, upon request.  Disney music always puts me in a good mood.  I am inspired to remember how I feel listening to these songs when I am facing another tough day of meetings.  And, because I feel like a song, here is my favorite Disney song of all time!

Human Rights Day Inspirations

In addition to being a Sunday filled with wonderful family events from AM Church to Anna's ChildrenSong Concert, to a wonderful family dinner out, the 344th day of 2017 was also the UN's Human Rights Day.  So, on 12/10/17, I remain inspired to treat all human beings with the respect they deserve and to do what I can to ensure that everyone is treated in a humane manner.  I know I can only affect my small corner of the world, but if we were all so inspired, our small corners could cover the Earth.

Snowy Inspirations

It was a snowish (not really that much stuck, but it did snow) day on the 343rd day of 2017.  And although the snow was an annoyance to me on 12/9/17, it did not really stop us from doing anything we had planned, and it did add a sense of holiday cheer to all the events.  So I am inspired not to let the snow bother me as much as it usually does, and to be inspired by the happiness it brings to others.  As long as I am allowed to stay inside and be warm.

Helping Others is Inspiring

The year is rapidly coming to a close, day #342 was a day filled with helping others.  Mainly at work, there were people to help on 12/8/17.  I am always inspired to help others and inspired by those who help others.

Inspired to Chat

I chatted a lot on 12/8/17.  Meetings that were planned did not seem to happen, but it left me with time, and opportunity, to chat.  And, in chatting on the 341st day of 2017, I actually got a lot of work done (maybe even more than in the planned meetings).  It is a reminder that informal conversations can sometimes be just as valuable as formally planned events.  I am inspired to work to use all forms of conversation to get stuff done.

St. Nicholas Inspires

12/6/17, the 340th day of 2017, was St. Nicholas Day.  St. Nicholas Day celebrates the third-century saint who sold all his possessions and gave his money to the poor. Raised to be a devout Christian, his whole life was dedicated to serving the sick and suffering.  Amidst all of the consumerism of the Christmas Season, I am inspired to think of THIS paragon of Christmas.  And to think of others and those who have little during this season.  And, while thinking, do something to help make things better for those in need.

Basketball Inspirations

12/5/2017 was the opening scrimmage for the Collingswood Girl's Basketball Team.  So I spend a large portion of the end of the 339th day in the Gym watching Alexa's team.  I am always inspired by the team's effort and cohesion.  It is also fun to see so many kids we saw playing in the Rec League playing at the High School Level.  This season should be fun.  ROLL COLLS!

Good Meetings, Good Teams Inspire

Monday, Monday, Monday, yes the 338th day of 2017 was a Monday.  And, for a Monday, it went pretty well!  Lots of good meetings on 12/4/17 with good teams of people.  It is sometimes hard to be inspired by meetings but today, it was the PEOPLE in the meeting that were inspiring me and the meetings went well, thankfully, because of it.

Inspired to Have Hope

We started the 337th day of 2017 at Church (it was Sunday).  And on 12/3/17, Michael's sermon was about having hope.  And not hope when it is something you do not think you will get (i.e. I hope I win the lottery even though I never buy a ticket....)  But real hope.  I am inspired to have hope.  Especially after this week (in the news, at work, body aches and sickness).  Being inspired to be hopeful is a good inspiration to have.  And a good way to start the week.

Christmas Preparation Inspirations

Day #336 was both relaxing and busy, if that is possible.  Feeling better, I slept in, just in case, but have slept so much in the past two days, I could not sleep THAT long.  And then, on 12/2/17, we completed some Christmas preparation tasks.  The tree was obtained, the ChildrenSong Preview Concert was attended (it was beautiful) and the Church was decorated.  And, of course, as we drove from place to place, Christmas music was on the radio.  People also just seemed nicer today, as I pulled out to make a left at the Christmas tree place, a lady stopped to let me go, and then rolled down her window and said, "Have a Nice Day!" when I waved a thank you.  This is how life should be EVERY day, but I am inspired to enjoy the Christmas preparations and to keep the season's positive mindset.  Hoping others do the same.  Maybe it's the spirit of Santa in us all (yes, like Dolly and Kenny, I still believe).

Inspired by the Benefits of Science

12/1/2017, World AIDS Day and the 335th day of 2017.  On World AIDS Day I am always reminded of how horrible the initial people suffering from this disease were stigmatized and how poorly they were treated (emotionally and sometimes even medically) in the early years.  But, for today's inspiration, I want to focus on the people who are working day after day, 24/7, to find a cure, to understand the science, to make the lives of people so much better.  We have come a long way, we have a long way to go, and I am inspired by and thankful for those researchers and practitioners who refuse to give up.

Medicinal Food Inspires

Day #334 of 2017 was a long (but productive) day at work and, when I arrived home on 11/30/17 I was, once again, exhausted.  After a quick nap on the couch (mmmmm naps), I found out why.  99.6 degree fever, slight. but still impactful, so I fed it with medicinal food.  Soup (OK, Won Ton, not Chicken, but still) and some concoction called "Green Goodness" mixed with OJ that was way too sweet.  But my wife and kids tel me it will make me feel better, and I am off to bed, early, to test theit theory.  Inspired to take good care, and get good sleep, and eat medicinal food.  Goodnight!

Inspired to #BeKind

I know that I have probably used this theme before, but on the 333rd day, a palindromic perfection, my inspiration is again to be kind and inspire others to do so.  On 11/29/17, kindness and the need for us to be kind to each other, were topics in a few meetings I attended.  In this crazy political time, on my uber competitive campus, in a world where people seem to be incentivized to look out only for themselves, we need to focus on kindness.  Maybe the Christmas Season will invoke these feelings in others.  I am inspired to be kind every day and try to inspire others to do so as well.

Inspired to Give

11/28/17 is #GivingTuesday.  I know it's a made up holiday that allows charities benefit from the consumer culture that brings us Black Friday and Cyber Monday.  But, on the 332nd day of 2017, I am inspired to give every day and as much as I can.  I hope you are all giving what you can, as well.

Monday, November 27, 2017

Inspired by Technology

The 331st day of 2017 was Cyber Monday and it was also Election Day for the Penn Band.  And, on 11/27/17, I watched as a student in Argentina (on a Study Abroad) ran for, and won, a position on the Band Board.  She conducted her speech with a video she sent, and did a Q & A on speaker phone.  Technology is amazing, whether it allows people to buy things without waiting in long lines and crowded parking lots, or when it brings Band members, countries away, together.  I am inspired to focus on the positive aspects of technology (yes, I know there are some concerns as well) and inspired to use technology for the good of others and inspire others to do so as well.

Visiting Friends Inspires

After Church on 11/26/17, we went visiting.  And, on the 330th day of 2017, we were blessed to visit two really good sets of friends and spend some ordinary time together.  But, as the quote states, these ordinary times were made extraordinary by being with amazing people.  I am inspired to ensure that our friends know how much we appreciate and love them, and inspired to visit them whenever we can (and when they will have us!)

Parade Inspirations

Inspiration came early on 11/25/17.  Because the 329th day of 2017 was also the Collingswood Holiday Parade.  And, for the first time, Oaklyn School had a float in the parade, along with all of the other elementary schools in Collingswood.  It was truly a community effort and it honored Tyler, who we lost at the end of the School Year last year.  My community never ceases to inspire me and, today, it was very inspiring.  Looking forward to future parades and future community efforts.

Rescue Inspirations

11/24/17 marks the 4th anniversary of our dog, Skylar's gotcha day.  We drove all the way to Ohio and, on 11/24, met her, in person, for the first time.  So on the 328th day of 2017 (just as it was in 2013), I am inspired by all of the people and agencies in our world that save and rescue animals.  And I am glad that Skylar was rescued and came into our lives.  Since we cannot imagine our world without her.

Thanksgiving Inspirations

327 is a great number.  3 cubed is 27 so there was good numeric karma on the 327th day of 2017. And 11/23/17 was also Thanksgiving.  Not much doubt about what inspired me on this day.  Thanksgiving is a great holiday, filled with family, food, fun, football, just a great evening was had.  Heading to bed happy and content and inspired to remember what is important.

Inspired to be Thankful XX: Thankful for Anticipation

11/22/17 was a day of anticipation.  On the 326th day of 2017, everyone at work was headed to the early dismissal at 2PM.  And we are all waiting for our family and food filled day tomorrow as we celebrate Thanksgiving.  I am inspired to enjoy the anticipatory moments, but also to slow down and enjoy the present and not let the future come too soon.  Thankful for what I have now, but also thankful that I anticipate more to come.  And if this Carly Simon song is good enough for a ketchup commercial, it is good enough for an inspirational song of the evening.

Inspired to be Thankful XX: Thankful for My Bed

It is 11/21/17, and I am so tired.  The 325th day of 2017 was a doozy.  The best part of my day was when I was in the Dentist Chair getting my teeth cleaned (yup, the day was a doozy) listening to the Pandora Beatles channel.  Chilling in the chair, trying not to fall asleep, made me think of my bed, where I am headed now.  Earlier than usual, but I need it.  Thankful for my bed, and inspired to spend more time in it in the upcoming long weekend.

Inspired to be Thankful XIX: Thankful for Penn Band Nation

11/20/17 was the annual Penn Band Thanksgiving/Friendsgiving/Lowbrass Dinner and Pageant.  It was a long day of work on the 324th day of 2017, but the music and mirth, the food and friendship, made me inspired to be thankful for my involvement with the Penn Band.  Glad it continues to this day.

Inspired to be Thankful XVIII: Thankful We (soon) Have a New Couch

After Church on day #323, we ended up at the Mall.  Yes, on 11/19/17, we finally (about a year too late) went couch shopping.  Although we love the furniture we currently have, the combination of Skylar and young kids have brought us to the time to get new ones.  I am inspired to be thankful that Alexa and Sarah picked out some good stuff (I was just the chauffeur), and they texted Anna for the AOK.  We spent the rest of the day as a family, and a lot of it in the family room.  Furniture is important (and I will be happy when it finally arrives), but the people ON the furniture is what is important.

Inspired to be Thankful XVII: Thankful for Teams

I saw a lot of productive teams on the 322nd day of 2017.  From the members of the Marching Band, who covered more events than on a Homecoming Saturday, to the teams that we followed on the field and the court today (who all won their games), to the myriad of teams involved in the Little Mermaid at Collingswood Middle School.  On 11/18/17, and on most days, I am so thankful for wonderful teams.  They inspired me today, and I am inspired to continue to work in teams and lift up teams because we truly can do better in a group than alone.

Inspired to be Thankful XVI: Theater Thanks

I am so happy and thankful for the Theater Program at the Collingswood Middle School.  On the 321st day, after an unexpected day at work, I was in the CMS Auditorium watching my daughter who has become a full fledged theater kid.  On the 16th day of Thankful Inspirations, 11/17/17, I am thankful for the amazing program, the inclusion of  Oaklyn and Woodlynne kids, the amazing leaders in Miss Whitman and Mr. Hartung and their teams.  Anna loves performing and I love watching her.  So proud!

Inspired to be Thankful XV: Thankful for Relaxing Music

The 320th day of 2017 found me working late on 11/16/17.  Sometimes you just get a data request that you cannot deny and you must work to complete it.  But, I was inspired to be thankful for relaxing music which soothed my soul as I worked late.  Thank you Pandora Enya Radio!

Inspired to be Thankful XIV: Thankful for the Piano

The 319th day of 2017 is a Wednesday.  And, on 11/15/17, as with most Wednesdays, that meant we had piano lessons to run to this evening.  Since Sarah had a meeting, I made sure I was home on time to get to piano on time and I was lucky to hear Alexa and Anna practice before the lessons started.  After a day of work, not much is better than hearing my daughters play the piano.  I am thankful that they are still playing, thankful for the beautiful music they are inspired to play, and looking forward to years of beautiful music in my future.

Inspired to be Thankful XIII: My Community is Involved

It was a long work day on 11/14/17, but I still rushed home on the 318th day of 2017 for another meeting.  And the turnout at the Oaklyn BOE Meeting was great!  A discussion of the future of our sending relationship with Collingswood and the future of the school and its place in our community was had.  And the questions and conversation was really great.  So many people who care about the kids and our community.  I am thankful for this community of caring individuals and inspired to continue to do what I can for the kids and to support our school.

Inspired to be Thankful XII: My Love of Numbers

Not a lot dramatic happened on the 317th day of 2017.  And that is just fine.  I was reminded, on 11/13/17, that it is a triple prime day (11, 13, 17) and then, on the way home, my odometer hit 84048.  Simple pleasures, in numbers.  I am thankful for the pleasure that simple numbers can bring, and I am inspired to keep finding happiness in the simple numerology of life.

Inspired to be Thankful XI: The Hope From a Baptism

Sunday, 11/12/17, the 316th day of 2017, started with an amazing event.  I love Baptisms and I was blessed to be asked to be AJ's Godfather (kiss my ring) and we attended the service this morning.  Whenever I watch babies being baptized, it fills me with hope.  Babies are so pure, and I am inspired by the futures that are possible.  Adults are the cause of most of the mistakes we see in society, so I like to focus on the kids and the good they can bring.  I am thankful to have been chosen to be AJ's Godfather and pledge to help him achieve the future that he (and we) deserve.  And, in a musical sense, let's focus on a classic from Whitney!

Inspired to be Thankful X: Veterans (and those who continue to serve)

11/11/17 - Veteran's Day 2017. And, on the 315th day of 2017, I am repeating a post from a year ago. My thankful inspirations are, once again, for all those who have served and those who continue to serve. THANK YOU!

Inspired to be Thankful IX: I Love My Kids

The commute to and from work on the 314th day of 2017 was so much better than usual.  That is because, on 11/10/17, I convinced my daughters to spend one of their NJEA vacation days with me, in the office.  Had a productive day at work, the girls made me smile all day, and then we capped it off with all four of us having a family movie night.  There is no question how thankful I am with how well my daughters are growing up.  From little kids to beautiful (inside and out), young women.  I am inspired to be sure they always know how much I love them and how much they mean to me!

Inspired to be Thankful VIII: Got a Haircut

11/9/17 was day #313 of 2017.  Being a palindromic day, it had to be a good one.  And it was!  A good day at work, a good meal with my family, TV show catch-up, even got a little work done on the home computer.  A satisfying day.  But, a day most notable because I was able to finally get a haircut.  In my season of being inspired to be grateful, I truly am thankful that I have had the same barber for years and, frankly, I do not have much hair, but he always makes it look better.  And the best part is the conversation, not really the haircut (not much hair, remember).  I am a loyal customer and a creature of habit - so today I thankful for being able to have the same person as a barber for year and year and hopefully years to come!

Inspired to be Thankful VII: Good Friends

All throughout day #312 of 2017, I was constantly reminded of the value of good friends.  On 11/8, I laughed with good friends at work, I saw my kids interact with their good friends, and I spoke with good friends online.  In our time of thanksgiving, I am inspired to appreciate the friends I have and the friends I have yet to make.

Inspired to be Thankful VI: The Privilege to Vote

11/7/2017 was Election Day 2017.  So I started the 311th day at the ballot box.  I am always inspired to vote, to state my beliefs in the voting booth.  And my favored candidates do not always win (but they did today!) but I am always inspired to vote.  The privilege of voting, the way to honor the process and those who fought for our right to vote, and, of course, voting allows us to also complain.  I am inspired to continue to be part of the process and to work to improve our processes.  Politics seem very frustrating these days, but they will only get better if we all vote.  I am thankful for the privilege today and glad I exercised that right.

Inspired to be Thankful V: The Church Administrative SLG

It was a long, but fruitful, day at work on the 310th day of 2017.  But, still, I found myself at a 2-hour Administrative SLG meeting on 11/6/17.  And it was a great meeting.  As I continue the Inspirational Thanksgiving theme, I am so thankful for the inspiration I gain from members of this committee, working so hard to be great stewards of the time, talent, and treasure our church has been blessed with.  There were thoughtful discussions, laughter and smiles, and then we ended with prayers of the people.  AMEN!

Inspired to be Thankful IV: Church Music

Being a Sunday, we started 11/5/2017 at Old First Reformed UCC.  And the best part of the morning of the 309th day of 2017 was getting to sing again in Choir.  I have been so busy at work and with other things, that I have not had time for Choir.  I really hope to be able to return to singing soon, being musical is inspirational.  And I am inspired to feel that inspiration more.  I am thankful for the solace that music brings in my life, both performing it and listening to it.  And, even though we have already discussed saints (on 11/1), I leave you with one of my favorite hymns.

Inspired to be Thankful III: Homecoming

Day #308 was Penn's Homecoming!  So most of the Sherrs (Anna had play practice) spent a lot of time on Penn's Campus on 11/4/17.  It was a great day, perfect weather, a Penn Football win over Princeton (that was a little too close for comfort, but still great!), and a lot of time talking to a lot of Penn Alumni.  I am inspired by how happy people are to come back to campus.  I am also inspired to remember that it truly is coming home for many alumni (even though when we work on campus, it's just coming back for another day).  Had a great day, on a great campus - GO QUAKERS!

Inspired to be Thankful II: Fridays

11/3/17, the end of a long, long week.  And the 307th day of 2017 ended an amazing family dinner out (Red Lobster, yum cheddar biscuits!) and then family TV time.  I am thankful for Fridays, especially lately, because they provide a needed respite at the end of chaos.  And they are the precursor for the best day of the week this Fall, Saturdays.  I am inspired to use these times to relax and recharge.  And I am thankful for this time with self and family.

Inspired to be Thankful I: My Family

So we are in the Season of Thanksgiving, starting with the 306th day of 2017.  Starting with 11/2/17 and running through Thanksgiving, I have decided to be inspired to be thankful each day.  So, my initial thanksgiving inspiration is, of course, My Family!  After work, it was great to come home, and then run right back out to watch Alexa play her last Fall softball game of the year.  Sarah kept the book and I charted the game on the iPad, it was a family affair.  And now we are all together, getting ready to relax and go to bed.  No matter what is going on in my life, I am thankful and blessed to have my family as my rock.  They inspire me, also, to be a better person.  Much love and thanksgiving tonight.

Saints Inspire

The 1st of November is All Saints Day.  And, at the end of the 305th day of 2017, I sit here at my computer thankful and feeling blessed by all the saints in my life.  From my grandparents (Aaron, Ann, Nettie, Saul, Amelia, and Paul) to those at work (Lu, Frank, Peter, Sondra, Michael) to those from Church (Peter, Jeanne, Lois, Carl) to those in my community (Tyler, Ed, Michelle, Tommie) to those not mentioned here but present in my heart, all of these saints have advised me, loved me, made me laugh, educated me, mentored me, and added to my life in so, so many ways.  I am inspired to never let those memories fade.  I am inspired to live life to honor their wishes and their values.  And I am inspired not to be sad, but to be joyous for their lives and the love they gave.  This is why I am picking this song today to express this joy.

Halloween Inspirations

The 304th day of 2017 was Halloween!!  And 10/31/17 was a great Halloween at that!  Got to leave work early to see my daughter's Field Hockey Playoff Game (loss, sob, great season, Panthers!) and then got to hand out candy to the kids of Oaklyn for the afternoon/evening and then spend the evening with the family watching Hocus Pocus (not as good as I originally remembered (but Amok, Amok, Amok, Amok) and carving pumpkins and watching the World Series.  Halloween is an inspirational holiday for me.  Not because it celebrates ghouls or the occult or anything like that.  No, I love the sense of community as people leave work early to be home to hand out candy; as people set up grills on their front lawn and handout hot dogs and waters; as kids are smiling from ear to ear; as we meet neighbors we have not yet met before.  Halloween can bring out the best in a lot of people, and I am inspired to keep fostering that feeling in my town.  For my song today, I picked a song that fits both Halloween AND the World Series!  A MJ classic!

Inspired to Encourage Student Leadership

On the evening of the 303rd day, I was happy.  Not just because 10/30/17 was a palindromic day, but also because I delivered recommendation letters to youth counselors for OMAYSC.  These teens are fantastic students, volunteers, and deserving candidates.  When I think about these students, I am inspired to think we have a chance for a better future.  I know we adults do all we can to mess things up, but I think the next generation (at least these kids) will be AOK.

Inspired to Serve

The 302nd day of 2017 was also the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation at our church.  And, being that Old First is, at its roots, a German Reformed Church,  10/29 had all of the staples of Reformation Sunday, and I especially enjoyed A Mighty Fortress is Our God played on piano AND organ.  But the sermon had more to do with service.  And service to others is what I appreciate the most about our church's message.  We are so blessed, so we serve others in thanksgiving of what we have.  And, in serving others, we become blessed even moreso.  I am inspired to continue to serve, wherever I may be.  And share my blessings with others and, in giving to others, receive as well.

Scooby Doo inspires

10/28/17 was the 301st day of 2017.  And while it was a relaxing day (man, I love Saturdays), the most notable thing about today is it is the 23rd anniversary of the day Sarah and I started to "date".  And it was a Scooby Doo marathon on the Cartoon Network that got this whole Sherr Family thing started and the past 23 years have been so amazing and filled with joys and blessings to numerous to mention.  Instead, I will be inspired to remember the wonder and amazement of a budding romance and the amazing life it has become!  ❤️

Frustration Inspires

Honestly, I was frustrated for much of the 300th day of 2017.  10/27/17 brought some frustration at work, but a lot of frustration after work at a community event.  But I am inspired not to dwell on the frustrating moments in my life and, instead, learn from the frustration.  Whether it is changing my ways, learning to delegate and depend on others (at work and in volunteering), or just using the frustration to motivate me to do better in the future, I want to find positivity and success from today's feelings.

College Inspire

After work on the 299th day of 2017, Alexa, Sarah, and I ended up at the CHS College and Career Fair.  Although, on 10/26/17, I felt strange watching my daughter surveying all of these colleges' tables, kinda like a Coca-Cola salesman watching his kid at a Pepsi/Snapple tasting party.  But, I also felt inspired watching all of the young people exploring their options for their future.  A lot of good vibes in the gym tonight, and it was fun to talk, unofficially, about Penn and other schools with them.  I guess I am always on duty.  But it's so easy to speak about Penn.

Anniversaries Inspire

Day #298 of 2017 was 10/25/17 and was the 19th anniversary for my sister, Abigail, and her husband, Erik.  We do not see each other enough, but I am still inspired by their love for each other, their love for their children, and their love for their families.  Any time I can focus on inspirational love is a good day.  Plus, I can link to one of my favorite Elvis songs.  HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!

Inspired to Combat Bad Days

I did not have a bad day on 10/24/2017.  In fact, day #297 of 2017 started with bagels in the office and continued with good meetings and good work.  But, I have seen many posts of "Bad Days" and "Tough Times" on the FB pages of my friends and family.  We all hit rough patches here and there and I think it is so important that we are there for each other in times of need.  So I am inspired to help people combat their "Bad Days" and I start with this song, which has some sad lyrics, but the video, in my opinion, has a hopeful feel and conclusion.  Hopefully my friends can see it too and it starts to help them turn their frowns upside-down.

Doing Good Inspires

Day #296 ended in a community board meeting and we discussed the way that we could continue to work to make Oaklyn a better place for our kids.  10/23/17 was a day of hard work, at work, and then some good work, in Oaklyn.  I am inspired to keep doing good in my community and, by doing good, we do well.

Sports Inspirations

I know that real life and sports are not one and the same.  All in all, however, I was glad to spend the afternoon of the 295th day of 2017 at a professional soccer game.  10/22/17 was the first Philadelphia Union game my family ever attended and it was a good one.  A 6-1 victory, far more scoring than I had expected.  And we learned the Doop Song! A good time was had by all.  I am not inspired BY sports, but, as the quote suggests, I am inspired by the relief (temporary that it might be) that sports can provide from the heavy issues of the present day.  Whether it is watching my daughter, watching the Quakers, watching pros in person, or even watching them on TV, I appreciate the diversion.  Now back to reality for the work week ahead.

Inspired by the Power of Song

I spent most of the 294th day of 2017 as a spectator.  First, on campus, at Football and Women's Soccer, but I ended 10/21/17 as a spectator of song.  Anna's ChildrenSong Choir got to sing with the Rowan University Choir tonight.  It was a great concert.  I am always inspired by how song can move my emotions, as the Director of Rowan said, invoking "all the feels."  I am proud of Anna and her group.  They held their own with a college level choir, and sounded very good.  I am inspired by the love of music and theater Anna is showing and look forward to seeing it blossom.

Working Together Inspires

For the past week, we have all been working together on a very large, very important project.  On the 293rd day of 2017 I was a part of a great team, working together.  I am proud of our team on 10/20/17.  The task was not easy, but the spirit of teamwork made it better.  I am inspired to use the momentum of this spirit of working together to continue on and tackle our future work.

My Pastor Inspires

Just 5 days ago, my inspiration was advocacy.  And, today, the palindromic 292nd day of 2017, it is someone who personifies the word.  I was predicting that 10/19/17 would be an inspirational day, and it was, but not in the way I had thought at the start of the week.  Today, while most of us were working in our jobs, or sitting in our classrooms,. my Pastor, Michael Caine, and his clergy colleagues of POWER (Philadelphians Organized to Witness, Empower, & Rebuild), https://powerinterfaith.org if you are interested, peacefully protested a hotel in Philadelphia.  This hotel received $183K (yes that is THOUSANDs) in public funds to build a hotel with a promise of 175 jobs for the community.  Well, the hotel is built and, guess what?, yup, where are the 175 jobs? I am inspired by Michael (and his colleague)'s walking the walk, practicing what they preach (really!), and standing for the rights of those that are the last and the least.  They were willing to be arrested (and trapped in a police station elevator) as an act of civil disobedience.  While I do not want to be arrested, this inspires to me to do what I can to also speak for those without a voice, to fight for what is right, and to practice what I speak.
