Advocacy Inspires

There was a wonderful event on Penn's campus on the 287th day of 2017.  10/14/17 was the celebration of the 35th anniversary of Penn's LGBT Center.  But it was also the celebration of the career of Bob Schoenberg and the renaming of the Center to the Robert A. Schoenberg Carriage House.  And, as I stood and listened to all of the speeches, I came to realize what I liked the most about Bob's career.  What Bob did, in a nutshell, is advocate for a population of students (and staff and faculty, by the way) who had little to no voice on campus.  He gave them a voice and allowed the students to be agents of change.  As he retires, I am inspired to be an advocate and an agent of change on Penn's campus just as Bob was (and will likely continue to be, in a different role).  In these politically charged times, it can be scary to speak out, but we must.  And we must work to change the future to what we know it should be.
